Rolex Submariner vs. Rolex Yacht-Master: The Two Nautical-Inspired Models

The Rolex Submariner and the Yacht-Master are two of the most popular nautical-themed models that Rolex has offered. While the Submariner is ideally the most famous Rolex out of all, the Yacht-Master is the most contradictory models in the catalogue.

Indeed, the Rolex Submariner has been the world’s most desirable diver timepiece for generations now, introduced in 1953. On the contrary, the roots of the Yacht-Master are much coiled with the Submariner. Since its launch, the watch has developed into one of the most elegantly varied ranges within Rolex’s Sports collection.

Thus, we are today going head-to-head with these two popular and coveted watches – the Rolex Submariner and the Rolex Yacht-Master. One is the quintessential diver watch, and the other is a regatta-countdown flyback chronograph. Let’s have a closer look!

Rolex Submariner vs Rolex Yacht-Master: Comparison

The Case

Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master initially in only yellow gold. Later, the model appeared in Everose flaunting Cerachrom bezels and also, in Rolesor (a patented combination of gold and steel).

Moreover, the brand also released the Yacht-Master in Rolesium. It is Rolex’s combination of a stainless steel case sporting a platinum bezel. However, both the Submariner and Yacht-Master come with a similar 40mm case size.

When it comes to appearance, the two models look pretty similar. While the Submariner is instead an understated, everyday choice, the Yacht-Master is ideally more showy and sleek.

The Dial

The Rolex Yacht-Master was the first watch to flaunt the patented Maxi dial. Although the fatter hands and bigger indexes have been contentious, it indeed makes the dial more legible.

However, reference 126622 is available with two dial options – sunburst blue and dark rhodium.

  • The rhodium dial offers the watch an overall monochromatic look.
  • Reversely, the sunburst blue possesses an eye-catching contrast with the ‘Yacht-Master’ name and seconds hand in bright red.

On the other hand, the Rolex Submariner reference 116610LN comes with a classic dial in black. However, the dial flaunts pure white markers and handset. Eventually, it offers perfect readability underwater or outside.

The Intricate Movement

Both the Submariner and Yacht-Master watches ran on the same Calibre 3135 movement until this year. Since 1988, this movement has been powering the Submariner. However, the latest Submariner ref. 116610LN also comes equipped with this calibre.

At the recent Baselworld, Rolex released the Yacht-Master ref. 126622 with an upgraded movement – Calibre 3235. Rolex has fitted the movement with a brand-new escapement Chronergy. Interestingly, it is supposedly 15% more effective than before and provides a refined 70-hour power reserve.

Overall, there is nonetheless a considerable difference between the Rolex Submariner and the Yacht-Master. Although the Submariner is today a more underrated choice, it is yet sturdy enough to get noticed. However, the Rolex Yacht-Master has always been a luxurious dressy option, featuring slimmer lines, polished lugs and centre links.
